POSITION SUMMARY:

The Director of Clinical Training administers the clinical training component of the MFT department. This position requires professionalism, diplomacy, discretion and integrity in all areas of responsibility. The Director of Clinical Training represents the MFT Department and the School of Cultural and Family Psychology while cultivating and maintaining positive working relationships with key people and entire departments throughout the College, outside agencies and the Board of Behavioral Sciences. The responsibilities of this position extend toward greater service to the College. This position is a full-time staff position reporting to the Dean of the School of Cultural and Family Psychology. The staff position will be designated as Professional Faculty.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Prepare MFT Students to enter Clinical Training

  • Provide information and prepare first and second year students to start clinical training.
  • Design and set collaboration with MFT Department faculty for the Clinical Training Protocol for all MFT Students.
  • Teach and oversee pre-practicum courses MFT600 and MFT605.
  • Collaborate closely with the specialization directors of all MFT programs in the department, in order to individualize the clinical training protocol and experience of the students in each specialization program.
  • Hold Information sessions/workshops for students planning to start clinical training the following year.
  • Schedule Agency Forums to invite agencies to present their clinical training programs to our MFT students.
  • Assist all students, on an individual basis through the process of completing all prerequisites needed to be awarded the MFT Trainee status, including:

    the process of full admission,

    completing 18 hours of personal therapy,

    preparing resumes and cover letters,

    guiding them through selection of placements and the interview

            process, approving placement contracts,   

monitoring the purchase of professional liability insurance by all

            MFT Trainee students.

Clinical Training Advisor/Monitor Students during their Clinical Training Year

  • Monitor and support MFT students during their tenure at the clinical training placement (agency).
  • Review and archive all student records for clinical training to assure compliance with state regulations and to assure quality of student performance, as per departmental academic standards.
  • Assist and support with all students’ concerns regarding their clinical training placement experience. For that purpose, interact with students, their Academic and Faculty Advisors, their Practicum instructors and Agency Representatives and Clinical Supervisors, as needed, by phone, email and face-to-face meetings, including site visits at the clinical training placements.
  • Collaborate with all Practicum instructors to assure quality of training for our MFT students, as well as compliance with state regulations.
  • Oversee students who need additional semester(s) to complete training (MFT685, Practicum Continuation).

Interface with Community Agencies serving as Clinical Training Placements

  • Recruit and approve community agencies as clinical training placements for MFT students. Actively engage in providing clinical training to our students, on a regular or intermittent basis.
  • Interact with agencies as needed throughout the year, to assure quality of training of our MFT students, as well to assure the quality of clinical service our students are providing to mental health clients in the community
  • Representing the MFT programs at the MFT Consortia throughout California.

Interface with California Board of Behavioral Sciences (BBS)

  • Serve as liaison for BBS related communications, documentation sharing and ensuring that the MFT clinical training program is aligned to state requirements.

Department-related Responsibilities

  • Attend bi-monthly department meetings
  • Participate in department-level strategic planning and budget process
  • Other duties as assigned by School Dean

ESSENTIAL KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Understanding of culturally attuned clinical work and supervision for culture centered MFT programs
  • Must have excellent communication, organizational, writing, editorial and project management skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks in a fast-paced environment with sensitivity to the needs of a diverse population
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective and professional relationships with students, administration, faculty, adjunct faculty, professional consultants and representatives from all levels of management while maintaining integrity and confidentiality
  • Understanding of all state regulations relating to the discipline of Marriage and Family Therapy, especially those regulating the clinical training of MFT graduate students.
  • Ability to assure that the Clinical Training Protocol of the MFT Department is in full compliance with BBS regulations.

POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education:  MA in MFT or MSW in the Mental Health Field is required. (License preferred).
  • Clinical Experience in Mental Health Services: minimum 3 years required.
  • Documented Clinical Supervisory experience, preferably 2 years for pre-masters trainees or post masters interns
  • A minimum of 3 years of experience in higher education preferred (similar work done at an agency may be considered in lieu of 3 years’ experience in higher education).
  • Demonstrated knowledge and proficiency with technology such as, MS Office (Word and Excel)  meeting platforms such as Zoom and Microsoft Teams, and CANVAS.
