Under the direct supervision of the Director of the Center for Academic Program Support (CAPS), assists all HCC students through CAPS tutoring, writing, ESL, and math centers. Facilitates study groups and skills workshops on an ongoing basis. Assists HCC students in content-related material, including a review of syllabi with students to clarify assignments and expectations. Peer I may be asked to work with specialized academic programs such as Supplemental Instruction, Gateway-to-College and Early College.&nbsp;<ul><li>Understand the course content and be prepared to engage students in active learning to set the foundation for the tutoring and help to identify the student’s needs and tailor the session accordingly.</li><li>Help students interpret the course content by breaking down complex concepts into simpler terms that the student can understand to ensure the student clearly understands the course content before moving on to other tasks.</li><li>Model or teach study skills, time management, note-taking, and test-taking to teach the student how to learn effectively by modeling good study habits and providing tips on managing time, taking notes, and preparing for tests.</li><li>Work with students on a one-to-one or small-group basis to provide individualized attention, identify the student’s strengths and weaknesses, and provide feedback accordingly.</li><li>Understand a Student’s Learning Style and adapt the tutoring session accordingly. Some students may be visual learners, while others may be auditory learners. Identify the student’s learning style and provide instruction accordingly.</li><li>Help students become independent learners by teaching them how to learn independently, providing guidance on studying effectively, and encouraging them to take ownership of their learning.</li><li>Assist in record keeping by keeping track of the student’s progress, maintaining accurate records with detailed notes on the student’s performance, and providing regular updates to the instructor.</li><li>Become proficient in the software used for instruction to effectively guide the student as needed.</li><li>Help students integrate information technology within the given area by teaching them how to use technology to enhance their learning, identify appropriate technology tools and provide instruction on how to use them.</li><li>Assistive Technology Center to help students with disabilities, identify appropriate assistive technology tools and provide instruction on how to use them.</li><li>Be able to identify and use resources to support student learning and provide guidance on how to use them.</li><li>Attend scheduled meetings or workshops to stay up-to-date on best practices in tutoring and be able to share their experiences and learn from others.</li><li>Communicate with the instructor if needed to review tutorial services to ensure the tutoring session is aligned with the course objectives. The State of Connecticut, Department of Children and Families (DCF), Wilderness School offers high impact wilderness programs intended to foster positive youth development. The Wilderness School is a prevention, intervention and transition program intended to assist our students to develop self‐esteem, internal locus of control and interpersonal skills. Designed as a journey experience, our program is based upon the philosophies of experiential learning and is considered therapeutic for the participant. Studies have documented the Wilderness School impact upon the self-esteem, increased locus of control (personal responsibility), and interpersonal skill enhancement of adolescents attending the program. Professional level training and work experience as an Experiential Educator may be considered in lieu of Bachelor's Degree.
