POSITION: Executive Director of Post-Secondary Readiness and Alternative Programming

REPORTS TO: Acting Assistant Superintendent of School Leadership and Student Success

POSITION SUMMARY: The Executive Director of Post-Secondary Readiness, and Alternative Programming will establish and sustain a College Going and Career Development Culture and Climate throughout Hartford Public Schools in alignment with and support of The District Model for Excellence. The Executive Director will provide leadership in the development, operation, and integration of all HPS Secondary Frameworks and will collaborate with the Chief Academic Officer, Principals, and other stakeholders to ensure the school-based adoption and implementation of a district college-ready curriculum, career- readiness curriculum, “on-track” strategy, student-led conferencing, as well as other innovative strategies promoting post-secondary readiness. To ensure all students are on-track for post-secondary readiness, the Director will also coordinate programmatic elements of the alternative program offerings across Hartford Public Schools. The Executive Director will create models that support the implementation of the district’s high school graduation policy, internships, student success plans, and higher education partnerships. The Executive Director will set and monitor performance and program standards for Professional School Counselors and College, Career Specialists, other Secondary Staff and Specialists in the Hartford Public Schools. Based on these standards the Executive Director will support Principals by participating in College Career Specialists, other Secondary Staff and Specialists evaluations. The scope of the work includes monitoring, communicating and proactively responding to district and school level data regarding on-track status, promotion, graduation, post-secondary entrance assessment, transition planning, and capstone evaluation.


·        Design, implement, monitor and evaluate the HPS comprehensive PK-12 Framework and Curriculum that prioritizes student engagement and voice and minimally includes student-led conferencing, classroom-based components and intentional transition activities from grades 5 to 6, 8 to 9 and 12 to college and career.

·        Ensure school-based adoption and implementation of district college-ready curriculum in all content areas as well as other standards defining college readiness (e.g., academic behaviors, college knowledge). Support the customization of the Secondary Instruction Framework to align with the district’s core tenets of instructional practice and school design and each school’s themes, strands, feeder patterns and/or instructional practices.

·        Monitor, communicate and lead Data-Wise conversations / cycles based on students’ on-track status and “to and through” status for graduation and post-secondary plans both at the district and school levels. 

·        Facilitate strategies across the district’s high schools and alternative schools to increase graduation rates of all students. Provide programmatic alignment, oversight and professional learning to staff in partnership with Principals / Directors of alternative schooling and personalized pathway options.

·        Establishes and coordinates training and development programs for administrators in Secondary Schools.

·        Facilitate strategies across the district and within schools to increase students’ equitable access, readiness and support for college-level coursework including AP classes, ECE classes and dual enrollment.  

·        Develop partnerships with community organizations, colleges and universities to support the implementation of the College and Career Framework, to strengthen post-secondary outcomes for students and to establish a college support student ambassador program composed of students from local colleges as well as seniors of HPS.

·        Develop and implement district-wide PK-12 rituals and routines that promote and celebrate a college-going and a career-readiness culture and the portrait of a HPS graduate.

·        Develop and implement a comprehensive college awareness and preparation program for parents and community partners including peer reviewed and research based strategies and activities that increase college awareness and preparation from PK – 12/20.

·        Collaborate with district departments and initiatives to embed components of, extend the impact of and engage more stakeholders in the College and Career Framework, Secondary Instruction and the portrait of a HPS graduate including, but not limited to, the HPS Parent Academy, internships / jobs programs, and community outreach.

·        Facilitate professional learning for Principals, Professional School Counselors, College Career Specialists, Secondary Staff, Secondary Specialists, and Internship Coordinators related to the implementation of the HPS College and Career Framework and related district priorities.

·        Establish program and performance expectations for College Career Specialists positions and related programming consistent with the district theory of action. Co-evaluate College Career Specialists, Secondary Staff, Secondary Specialists, and Internship Coordinators related to guidance, college access, capstone project designs, student e-portfolios and high school accreditation.

·        Actively pursue grant opportunities to advance graduation rates, career development, and post-secondary enrollment rates.

·  Perform other duties that may be assigned by the Chief Academic Officer.


·        Advanced graduate degree in education, and/or leadership area.

·        High level technical skills, e.g. Adobe products, Microsoft products, e-portfolios, data systems

·        Experience with staff supervision and evaluations.

·        Experience providing effective professional development.

·        Experience with High School accreditation measures and processes.

·        Experience creating performance measures and systems.

·        Knowledge of data collection and tracking procedures to monitor program outcomes.

·        Experience working with college partners.

·        Knowledge of early college and dual credit models.

·        Excellent research skills.

·        Experience in school improvement planning and implementation.

·        Excellent communication, interpersonal and organizational skills.

·        Must be able to work within difficult time constraints and under stressful conditions.

·        Must be self-initiated and an innovative thinker within a collaborative team structure.

·        Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with administrators, teachers, staff, community and external partners.


·        Connecticut certification in Intermediate Administration (092).

SALARY AND TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary is in accordance with the Hartford Principals’ and Supervisors’ Association’s 2022-2023 Schedule for twelve-month positions, Salary Range of $143,908 to $156,134.
