Position Summary

The Operations & Facilities Management Department at Washington University School of Medicine is committed to delivering a comprehensive range of services to support the medical campus.

We oversee maintenance and operations for 65 buildings, covering more than 10.1 million gross square feet of space. This includes the 11-story, 609,000-square-foot neuroscience research building, which houses one of the world’s highest concentrations of neuroscientists. Our responsibilities include operational and administrative support, strategic planning, and project management.

Furthermore, as the School of Medicine continues to expand its presence both on and off campus in areas such as teaching, clinical care, and research, our team remains instrumental in ensuring the seamless delivery of clinical care, advancing research initiatives, and facilitating educational endeavors.

Acts as the liaison for occupants and services and provides operational support. Responsible for custodial services and minor facilities maintenance tasks and assists on larger projects.

Job Description

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Point of contact for all facilities-related inquiries from the occupants and visitors of the facility.
  • Submits and/or assists in the submission and follow-up of work orders and service tickets for all facility-related issues.
  • Conducts daily custodial quality assurance of work completed by the custodial contractor of the facility.
  • Corrects and reports deficiencies in a timely manner.
  • Completes routine assessments of the facility's architectural and overall aesthetics for improvement opportunities. Information should be submitted and tracked to completion in a timely manner.
  • Performs general custodial procedures; collects and disposes of trash and recyclable products.
  • Vacuum and dust all work areas, and clean restrooms, kitchens, and other common areas in accordance with the custodial service levels.
  • Cleans the interior and exterior windows as needed.
  • Performs minor repairs to all lighting systems, including exit lights, emergency lights, and exterior lighting systems.
  • Performs the replacement of damaged or missing ceiling tiles. Clears minor drain blockages to sinks, floor drains, drinking fountains, and toilets.
  • Performs daily assessment of exterior grounds identifying and correcting deficiencies as needed.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two years of technical certificate or degree with two years of field-related experience.
  • Demonstrate professionalism, respect for colleagues and stakeholders, unwavering integrity in all actions, dedicated pursuit of excellence, and a track record of consistent dedication to achieving organizational goals.
  • This position requires professional interpersonal skills with the ability to interact professionally with diverse groups of upper management, external stakeholders and entry-level staff.
  • This individual must have the ability to work independently without supervision, exercise sound judgment in establishing priorities; be willing to work cooperatively as well as independently with a high level of organizational skill to be responsive to change and innovation; demonstrate a high level of attention to details, follow established procedures and maintain a very high degree of consistency. Ability to comprehend written and spoken English terms used in facility maintenance and custodial environment.
  • Perform responsibilities with a positive approach, strong work ethic, dependability and an ability to be flexible and think quickly in a multi-tasking environment.
  • Displays good conflict resolution when dealing with peers and customers.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office (including PowerPoint, Excel, and Word) and Adobe Acrobat.
  • This position requires excellent time management and organizational skills along with a conscientious approach and a concern for quality.
  • Ability to lift and carry tools and materials weighing in excess of 50 pounds.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent high school certification.
  • Oneyear of experience in custodial services, maintenance, transportation, and/or customer service.  Additional education may substitute for years of experience at the discretion of the department. 
  • Obtain and maintain a Missouri Class E or Illinois Class D Driver’s license within 30 days of hire.

Salary Range

$17.52 - $26.27 / HourlyThe salary range reflects base salaries paid for positions in a given job grade across the University. Individual rates within the range will be determined by factors including one's qualifications and performance, equity with others in the department, market rates for positions within the same grade and department budget.
